- CD-ROM FEATURE
- --------------
-
-
- The premise is that now every single model of Amiga can be
- directly connected to a CD-ROM drive by some means or
- another. This doesn't have to cost much - the new Apple
- CD-ROM drive is a SCSI device that will directly connect to
- an A3000 or A500 fitted with a GVP or similar SCSI
- interface. I've listed the ways in which other computers can
- access CD-ROMs.
-

-
- Blag list
- ---------
-
-
- 1. Apple CD-ROM drive (Apple? Buy one!)
- 2. Zorro SCSI interface (preferable ZorroII) Power/Silica/First
- 3. IDE CD-ROM drive Silica
- 4. Tandem controller Golden Image
- 5. ALL the CD-ROM software in the world

-
- * CD-ROM drive
-
- I have no idea how to blag a CD-ROM drive for Apple. I
- suspect I will have to pay a visit to Dixons with a large
- sports bag and 'borrow' one for research purposes. Does your
- local Mac dealer supply them? Perhaps EMAP could get one
- extra?

- * External CD-ROM drive with SCSI interface and driver
- software for A4000 as advertised in February CU Amiga.
-
-
-
-
- Power Computing
-
- * SCSI interface card (SCSI2 for A4000 preferable, although
- a v11 Buster chip would also be required so probably no go
- here.)
-
-
-
-
- Golden Image
-
- * TANDEM controller (most important this - apparently it
- exists in Germany and the Golden Image boys are shipping it
- over. If we could get one shipped directly it might save a
- lot of time , if possible please mention this in the fax.)
-
- * OCTAGON SCSI controller (needed to use with Apple CD-ROM
- drive). It would be good to test this card and the GVP HD-8
- SCSI controller as supplied by Silica and First to see which
- works the best.

- Tony,
-
-
- CD-ROM Blag list.
- ------------------------
- (or how I plan to get Tony to blag all my kit for me)
-
-
- I'm having more trouble with this than I thought. I can't
- get a drive from Apple, because there are no local Apple
- dealers. Is there anyway you can find out who supplied your
- office Apple macs and try and 'borrow' a CD-ROM drive?
-
- My local Dixon's stock them, but (a) they won't let me
- borrow one [they are gits] and (b) they are asking £180 for
- one - they really cost about £100 from an approved Apple
- dealer, and anyway I can't afford £180 after paying the
- phone bill.
-
-
-
-
-
-
- SCSI cards
- ----------
-
- CD-ROM drives come in two flavours SCSI and not SCSI.
- Obviously to use the SCSI drives you need a SCSI interface,
- but tracking them down is starting to get difficult.
-
- Both Power and Gordon Harwood are advertising them - Power
- their own 'SCSI' card, and Gordon Harwood the Z3 Fastlane
- SCSI2 controller. Golden Image advertise the Oktagon which
- has been requested, hasn't it? If possible, please fax both
- Power and Gordon Harwood regarding SCSI cards for review.
-
- IDE/CDROM controllers are available from Golden Image. They
- said the Tamdem card might be late when I last spoke to
- them. Apparently it has been released in Germany. If you are
- speaking to them again please ask if there is any way to get
- in contact with the Germans and get a card that way.
-
-

-
- CD-ROM Drives
- -------------
-
-
- Apart from the Apple drives, CD-ROM drives are quite widely
- available. First Computer Centre are advertising them, so if
- possible please send a blag fax. The software they supply is
- incredibly useful.
-
-
-
-
-
- Other Stuff
- -----------
-
- There are now three different 'multiface' cards available.
- One from Golden Image, one from Omega Projects and one from
- GVP. If Andy Leaning has the Spectrum back he should be able
- to send a GVP card, so I'll give him a ring. You know the
- chap at Omega quite well, don't you ?....
-
-
-
-
-
- PC Companies
- ------------
-
-
- Here are a list of PC companies and their FAX numbers.
- These companies are advertising SCSI CD-ROM drives. If even
- one manages to send us a review drive, everything will be
- ok. Please say something like "please send us a SCSI CD-ROM
- drive to review in our fab 200,000 selling magazine. We are
- interesting in Apple, NEC, Toshiba, Teac, Hitachi and
- Pioneer SCSI drives, preferably externally housed. Any
- graphics or text orientated CD-ROMs would be handy too..."
-
- Obviously it would be better to contact Apple, NEC, Toshiba,
- Teac, Hitachi and Pioneer directly, but I don't have any
- numbers and I reckon in would take months to get anything
- out of them - what do you think?
